Australian Shares Make Early Gains, As Banks Rise

LOS ANGELES -- Australian shares kicked off Wednesday trades with modest gains, as Sydney's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.3% to 4,545.9 following a mixed lead from Wall Street. Financials were among the advancers. with Westpac Banking Corp. rising 1.4%, Australia & New Zealand Banking Group up 0.4% and Commonwealth Bank of Australia 0.8% higher. Media and telecom giant Telstra Corp. rose 0.6% after Chief Executive David Thodey told shareholders he expects continued growth in the current financial year.
